Helm4.1 crashes after windows update released today?
Not only one server, on 3 servers after updating the windows 2003 R2 with update Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86, Helm login pages comes with blank page and config tools does not start? Other asp.net sites are ok but not helm and its config tool.
Parallels must take a look at the issue urgently...

Information available by now:
The problem is reproduced.
This Windows update makes the encryptor malfunction and thus Helm 4.0 and Helm 4.1 won't work.
Helm 3 should not be affected.
It is highly recommended not to install this update and also temporarily disable Windows autoupdate.
Development team is switched to preparing Helm 4.0 and Helm 4.1 updates to release them as soon as possible.

Regards

so in other words, its the Parallels code protection for Helm and .net..
This will happen every time an update is released for .net, such as new versions, and service packs..

Yes, altought it will really depend on the vender for the Code Protector. Parallels will obviously have to wait for them to release the new protector, in order to recompile the code to the new code protection. But saying that, one assumes the vender of the code protection would be in direct contact with Microsoft about such updates and thus should already be ready to release their product update as and when Microsoft release theirs..

Imagine if I didn't actually come to the forums today. Come on! This is crazy that I have to shut off auto updates on 45 machines? Are kidding me? It might happen again?

I think windows updates are always scrary, especially when it comes to framework, spx.. I was lucky to restore the server. And I decided to turn off all updates and first test them locally and install manually as I do for linux servers.

We had to hide the update from our boxes with a bit of luck they shouldn't auto-nstall.

A fast update from Parallels would boost confidence slightly.

Too late, son of a gun. I told MS Update not to install the update so AU still installs it. Lucky its only on one box disabled AU for now.

Looking at it the only way to uninstall is remove .net 3.5 sp1?

I hope we will be able to deliver update on Friday or (the worst case) on Monday. That update would require manual installation (sorry, but configuration tool seems to be broken on affected boxes). After that we will focus on delivering regular update for protecting those who did not install this Windows update yet (and which one could be installed by configuration tool, not manually).

Regards

And what does this mean for those whose update protection expires? Will those people still be able to get these "protection" updates to ensure that the software they've purchased continues working after Wndows updates?

Fixes will be provided for both 4.0 and 4.1 version. If you are on 4.0 version and you don't have valid SUS - that's not a problem, you will be able to install this update.

I tell you what if this update flies out today I will be impressed.

Issue reported on 27th
Confirmed on 28th
Fix release 30th (if they release today)

Even monday is still 4 working days and isn't bad compared to previous fixes we have had to wait for.

Still pretty lame, I run a software company and any issues like this we aim to have a patch out the same day, not 3 to 5 days later. If it is a weekend then you work overtime.

The other problem is having to update Helm which always goes badly and usually takes a week to get Helm up and running again after an update due to all the new bugs new versions have. Now only use Helm for older accounts was actually hoping never to go through another week long Helm update again.

Workaround for this problem is available here http://kb.parallels.com/en/5996 . 4.1 version of Helm is now compatible with this Microsoft hot fix (for those who is going to perform install). 4.0 version will be fixed on Monday.

Quick workaround sir, when will the patch from the Helm Config Tool update be released?

BTW, anyone installing this update without testing it is NUTS. Any time Microsoft says "includes cumulative servicing updates" or "provides important application compatibility updates." without doing some major testing with code and server is going to see a problem...

If there is nothing wrong with your .NET, and you do not require any of the sublet KB's in this update, DON'T INSTALL IT unless you have read everything, fully understand it and have tested your apps.

I'm sure SmarterTools is going to see some FUN from this one as well, especially since they released their update to SmarterMail 5.x a few days ago and now support Smarter Notify (this is why I hate programming.).

First, thanks for quick turnaround from the point it was identified that this hotfix has been promoted to "high priority".

However I do recall that it was identified back in August that there was an issue with ASP.NET updates:
http://forums.webhostautomation.com/...ad.php?t=24933

This particular update has been available since August (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=951847), so it does seem amiss that it has taken this long before we've been able to install the ASP.NET updates.

I'm just hoping that going forward ASP.NET update issues will be addressed more quickly.
Thanks!

I believe the update that messed helm up this time was KB959209 not the one the OP posted.

For those who has not been yet affected should perform the windows update then parallels hotfix? Or should wait for next helm version without need parallels hotfix?

On more thing, I remembered that a few asp.net sites were affected by windows update, do you know how I can easily handle those sites? They are usual asp.net sites. Or what should I tell developer of those sites to do to fix their sites?

Thanks in advance

I ran the parallels fix, then Windows Update. This is the safest order IMO.

Patch for Config Tool isn't required. Helm already contains patched CLISecure modules, so you can safely install and upgrade Helm.

If you look at windows update list you can notice that this update has last published date 1/27/2009.

The order has no value.
